It's usually one of the first things couples ask me, and fair enough. Wedding photography is a big part of the budget, and prices can look all over the place when you start searching. So here's an honest guide to what most couples in the North East spend, and what's actually behind the numbers.

So what does a wedding photographer cost in the North East?

For most couples, a wedding photographer in the North East costs somewhere between around £900 and £2,500. Shorter half day coverage sits at the lower end, while a full day with a few extras sits nearer the top. You'll find people cheaper and dearer than that, but that's the range most couples are choosing from.

What changes the price

Hours of coverage. This is the big one. Half day coverage usually covers the ceremony, drinks reception and your couple photos. A full day runs from getting ready right through to the first dance, so you get the whole story of the day, not just the middle chapter.

Experience. Someone who has photographed hundreds of weddings knows how a day flows, where to stand during the vows and how to handle a rainy afternoon without anyone noticing. That calm on the day comes from years behind the camera.

Extras. Albums, a second photographer, an engagement shoot and extra hours all add to the total. They're worth thinking about early, as they're often better value as part of a package than added on later.

Travel. Most photographers include travel across their local area. If your venue is further afield, there may be a travel charge, so it's worth checking.

Editing and delivery. Every gallery takes days of editing after the wedding. If you'd like your photos back faster, an express service usually costs a bit more.

Where the money actually goes

For every hour on the day, there are plenty more behind the scenes. Planning calls, backing up every image, choosing the best shots, editing, delivering your gallery and designing albums all take time. Add professional cameras, backup kit and insurance, and you can see why good photography isn't cheap. It's not just turning up and pressing a button.

Questions worth asking before you book

  • How many hours are included, and what does an extra hour cost?
  • When will we get our photos back?
  • Is travel included for our venue?
  • What happens if you are ill on the day?
  • Can we see a full wedding gallery, not just the highlights?

Is it worth spending a bit more?

When the cake has been eaten and the flowers have gone, the photos are what you'll still be looking at years from now. You don't need to pick the most expensive photographer out there, but it's worth choosing someone whose photos you love and who you'd be happy to have around all day.
