Capturing the Perfect Wedding at Runa Farm: A Guide from a Wedding Photographer at a Real Wedding

There’s something truly special about photographing a wedding at Runa Farm. Tucked away in the serene countryside of Durham, this venue offers an idyllic setting for capturing every beautiful moment. If you’re planning your wedding here, or if you're a fellow photographer scouting for ideas, here you will find just a few of many photos from a wedding I have recently photographed.

Impressions of Runa Farm

Runa Farm is more than just a venue; it’s a full experience. Walking in, you’re met with rustic charm mixed with contemporary touches. The exposed brickwork, lush stylish interiors create the perfect backdrop for a wedding. It’s a dream to photograph because it brings together all the natural beauty and intricate details that help tell a couple’s story. It is broken up in 3 areas thats not including the outdoor option too. The Chapple where you marry, the main hall, a huge space for your wedding breakfast and night party, and then there is a large bar area with lots of space to mingle.

For wedding photographers, having a venue with diverse scenery is a huge bonus. Runa Farm is one of those rare spots where you can shoot indoor and outdoor portraits seamlessly, transitioning from rustic barns to open fields without losing that cohesive, enchanting feel.

1. GOLDEN HOUR IN THE FIELDS

The fields at Runa Farm are perfect for those romantic, golden-hour shots. As the sun starts to dip, the entire area is bathed in a warm glow, making the scene look almost magical. For couples, these moments feel intimate and natural, and for photographers, it’s the ideal time to capture authentic, candid shots.

Golden hour is the time to focus on natural light photography, where the sun’s softer rays create gentle shadows and enhance the couple's features. Position your couple against the sunlight to get that dreamy halo effect that highlights them beautifully against the backdrop.

2. INDOOR MAGIC: MAKING USE OF RUNA FARM’S UNIQUE INTERIORS

One of the standout aspects of Runa Farm is its interiors. From the exposed brick walls to stylish decor, the original trees... it’s all about creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Indoors, you’ll find quirky lighting and vintage furniture that adds character to your shots. The natural textures make it easy to photograph both close-up detail shots and wide-angle scenes, I love to use the stairs and the chapel area, wherever possible.

3. THE BARN: A RUSTIC DREAM COME TRUE

The barn at Runa Farm is where rustic meets elegance. It’s a perfect spot for group shots, speeches, and the all-important wedding meal.

CAPTURING THE KEY MOMENTS: DON’T MISS THESE

Weddings are full of significant moments, and as a wedding photographer, it’s essential to anticipate them. At Runa Farm, the setting gives you plenty of opportunities to add a bit of creative flair to each moment. Here are some key moments to watch for and how to photograph them.

THE FIRST LOOK

The “first look” is a special moment for many couples, and Runa Farm has some beautiful settings that make it unforgettable. The outdoor pathways, lined with greenery, provide a romantic and private spot for that first look. Capture the groom’s reaction, the bride’s excitement, and the natural setting that frames it all, the other options can be in the Farm House where bride preparation happens.

THE CEREMONY

Runa Farm’s ceremony space, "The Chaple" is simple but beautiful, with rustic seating. Use a long focal length to capture natural shots of the bride walking down the stairs into the Chapel. Go for a mix of wide shots, showing the couple and guests, and close-ups that focus on expressions and emotions.

THE RECEPTION

The reception is when everyone lets loose, and as a photographer, you want to capture that energy. The bar area, is where this happens, I love to look for all those congratulation cuddles and filled with warm light and rustic details, sets the stage for candid photos of guests laughing, dancing, and toasting the couple. Use a slightly faster shutter speed here to freeze the action while still maintaining the warm, inviting atmosphere.

SUNSET SHOTS

If you’re lucky with the timings and the weather, make sure to sneak the couple out for a quick sunset shoot. The fields at Runa Farm are ideal for this – wide-open skies and rolling fields make for a breathtaking backdrop. This time of day is all about soft, natural light, so keep things simple and let the beauty of the location shine through.

Photography Tips for Runa Farm Weddings

Photographing a wedding at Runa Farm offers endless possibilities, but here are a few tips to make the most of the location:

  1. Scout Ahead: Before the big day, take some time to walk around and note the best spots for different types of shots. Knowing where to be at each moment will make the day flow smoothly, every time I come here I have ideas how to use the same space differently or how to use space I haven't used before.
  2. Bring Versatile Gear: With both indoor and outdoor locations, it’s worth having a variety of lenses on hand. A good long focal lens is perfect for intimate ceremony shots, while a prime lens is ideal for those detailed, close-up shots of rings, hands, or table settings.
  3. Capture Candid Moments: Runa Farm’s natural setting makes it easy to capture guests and the couple in relaxed, candid moments. Take advantage of this and blend in with the crowd to get those genuine, unposed shots.

Why Runa Farm is a Wedding Photographer’s Dream

Photographing a wedding at Runa Farm feels less like a job and more like a day with your hobby. Every corner of this place offers something new to explore, and each wedding here is unique. The setting, the natural light, and the easy-going vibe of Runa Farm make it an ideal location for couples looking for a relaxed, rustic wedding with a modern twist.
