15 Wedding Photographer Questions You Should Ask Before You Book
Choosing the right wedding photographer can feel overwhelming. You’ve picked your venue and date, but finding someone who gets you, makes you feel at ease and captures the real energy of your day matters just as much as good photos.
These are the questions I wish every couple would ask their photographer before they pay a deposit. They help you understand how someone works, what to expect, and if they’re a good fit for your wedding day.
1. Are you available on our wedding date?
This one might seem obvious, but it’s the first thing you need to know. Ask right away so no time is wasted, I can get booked up-to 2 and sometimes 3 years in advance.
2. What’s your photography style?
Photographers describe their style in different ways. Some lean traditional, others more documentary or editorial. Ask them how they see their work and whether it matches the kind of photos you want from your wedding.
3. Can we see full wedding galleries?
A highlight reel on a website can look stunning, but what matters most is consistency across an entire wedding. Seeing full galleries helps you understand how a photographer captures real weddings from beginning to end.
4. Have you shot at our venue before?
Photographers who know your venue already will have an idea of the light, the best spots for photos and how the day flows. If they haven’t, that’s fine too — just ask how they’d approach your specific location, but this doesn't mean you should or should not consider them.
5. How do you approach group and family shots?
Some photographers like to keep them quick and simple, others plan a list and guide people through it. Make sure their approach matches your expectations so you get the groups you want without eating into your day.
6. What happens if something goes wrong?
Life throws curveballs. Ask what their backup plan is if they get ill or if their gear fails. Good photographers will have insurance and backup equipment ready to go, and experience on how to handle any and all situations.
7. Do you shoot in low light and evening?
Ceremonies and receptions can move into dim spaces or late evenings. Ask how comfortable they are shooting in low light and what gear or techniques they use to make those moments look great.
8. What’s your editing process like?
Some photographers lightly edit photos, others have a distinct style or workflow. It’s good to know how heavily they edit, how long it takes, and whether their editing style aligns with what you imagine.
9. When will we get our photos?
Delivery timing varies from photographer to photographer. Make sure you know roughly how long it will take so you aren’t waiting weeks with no idea when your memories will be ready.
10. What’s included in your price?
Is an engagement shoot included? Do you get digital files, prints or albums? Are travel costs covered? Knowing what’s included helps you compare photographers properly.
11. Do you have liability insurance?
Venues often require suppliers to have insurance. It’s helpful to confirm they’re covered — it protects you and them on the day.
12. How many hours are you there on the wedding day?
Some photographers offer partial coverage, others full day. Ask how many hours they suggest and whether there are options to add more time if you want it.
13. Can we meet before booking?
A video call or coffee meet lets you see if you click. Comfort with your photographer helps the whole day flow more naturally.
14. Do we have a contract?
It is very important to have a contract this protects you and your photographer so you both understand what to expect from each other
15. Can you recommend other suppliers?
Photographers often work with planners, florists and DJs. If they know your venue or scene well, they might have good supplier recommendations that fit your vibe.
