With centuries old stone walls, elegant ballrooms and gardens tucked into the grounds, without feeling staged or stiff. What It’s Like to Photograph a Wedding Here

When I arrive at Walworth Castle on a wedding day I’m always struck by how the venue naturally frames moments without forcing them. The grand staircases, old stone, and soft light through high windows give lots of opportunity for storytelling photos without ever feeling posed.

Getting ready shots in the castle rooms feel relaxed and spacious. Ceremonies in the ballroom have that classic castle atmosphere. I love wandering out into the gardens with couples for portraits, the architecture and greenery make every shot look like it belongs in a storybook.

Then there are all the tiny unplanned moments that make a wedding day feel real: a shared joke in the courtyard, kids chasing each other on the lawn, a quiet glance between vows. My goal isn’t just beautiful photos, it’s photos that take you back to how the day felt.

My Favourite Spots at Walworth Castle

Every time I’ve shot at Walworth Castle, it’s given me something different to work with. These are the spots I always head for.

The woods and grounds at the back

Just behind the castle there’s a lovely stretch of woodland and open grass. It’s perfect for a relaxed wander after the ceremony, away from everyone for ten minutes. The trees give natural frames, the light comes through the leaves softly, and there’s plenty of room for your guests to spill out later on.

Window light inside

The old castle windows are big, deep set and full of soft light, ideal for getting ready shots and quieter moments indoors. Even on a grey North East day, there’s always a window somewhere doing the hard work for me.

The dungeon

This is the one most photographers walk straight past. It’s dark, moody and full of character, and with a bit of off camera flash and some candlelight it becomes one of the most dramatic spots in the whole venue. Not every couple fancies it, but the ones who do never regret it.

Think outside the box

Walworth rewards a bit of imagination. The obvious spots look great, but some of my favourite photos here came from corners nobody else was looking at. Come with an open mind and we’ll find something different together.

WHAT IS A REASONABLE AMOUNT TO SPEND ON A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?

My full day packages start from £1,995, and half day packages start from £1,295. Planning a low season or Monday to Wednesday wedding? Get in touch, as a special price may be available.

HOW LONG IS REASONABLE TO WAIT FOR WEDDING PHOTOS?

Usually 3 to 4 weeks in the quieter months, and 4 to 10 weeks in the busy wedding season. I'll always aim to get your photos to you as soon as I can.

IS 4 HOURS ENOUGH TIME FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?

My half day package covers 4 hours, which is where my packages start, but that only covers part of a wedding day. For full coverage, from getting ready through to the first dance, my full day package covers 10 hours.

WHY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS ARE SO EXPENSIVE?

Equipment is only a small part of this but, the biggest reasons are, experience, a creative eye, the ability to adapt to all lighting and weather conditions, and your experience from enquiry to photos being delivered.

DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?

Yes, I have business insurance which includes public liability.

DO YOU HAVE BACKUP EQUIPMENT?

Yes. I carry spares of everything I need on the day, just in case, so nothing gets missed.

HOW MANY PHOTOS CAN I EXPECT?

It depends on your day, how many guests you have and how much is planned, but for a half day (4 hours) you can expect around 300 to 700 photos, and for a full day (10 hours) around 700 to 1,100.

WHEN AND HOW DO WE BOOK?

As soon as you have the date for your wedding to avoid losing out to someone else, you should think about booking me sooner rather than later, to make sure your date is available. Once you pay your booking fee (£300) the date is yours. I sometimes get booked up to 2 years in advance. Your booking fee also secures the current prices which may increase later.
