Thirsk Lodge Barns, is in the heart of North Yorkshire, is quickly becoming one of my favourite places to photograph weddings. Every time I’m here, I’m struck by how effortlessly beautiful it is – perfect for couples wanting that laid-back, rustic vibe with just the right touch of elegance. My experience at my latest wedding at Thirsk Lodge Barns, showcases why this venue is a dream come true for any wedding photographer in North Yorkshire.
First Impressions of Thirsk Lodge Barns
The moment you arrive at, Thirsk Lodge Barns feels welcoming and timeless. The sweeping views of the North Yorkshire countryside is just one of my favourites in the area and with amazing sunset, the views are incredible, when they come, it’s a venue that has it all. As a wedding photographer, you can immediately see how every corner of this place is picture-perfect. Whether it’s the ceremony barn with their rustic, historic feel or the open fields that provide stunning backdrops, the location really does all the work for you.
What I loved about this particular wedding was the way Olivia & Dan was so relaxed, and their attention to detail with the style matching Thirsk Lodge Barns. The natural beauty of this stunning wedding venue suited their easygoing vibe, and they were more than happy to wander through the gardens and fields and around the barns, which made capturing candid, romantic shots an absolute joy.

The ceremony took place in Thirsk Lodge’s main barn, a beautiful space with high ceilings, wooden beams, and a soft, neutral colour palette that complements any wedding style. The barn’s rustic elegance makes it a lovely place. You get this perfect mix of character and charm without any need for heavy decor.
GROUP SHOTS AND FAMILY PORTRAITS IN THE COURTYARD
After the ceremony, we moved to the courtyard for their confetti photos and I normally do family photos here to but today we went to the front of Thirsk Lodge Barns. I like to keep group photos simple and relaxed, which really suited Olivia & Dan after all this is my style. It was slightly overcast which can be nice for photos no harsh shadows or squinting eyes.
As a wedding photographer, it’s essential to find a balance between formal poses and candid interactions during group photos. At Thirsk Lodge Barns, the relaxed environment made everyone feel comfortable, and I was able to capture some beautiful, genuine smiles and laughter.
Golden Hour in the Fields: A Touch of Magic
One of the highlights of Thirsk Lodge Barns is its stunning countryside setting, which really comes into its own at golden hour. Just before sunset, and sunset itself, today it didnt look like it was going to happen but at the very end of the day we did get some lovely colours peeking through the clouds, and we took advantage of.
I like to try and keep poses not so posey more natural and I rather guide you into a fun moment, focusing more on capturing their connection. Thirsk Lodge Barns’ expansive fields, with the North Yorkshire hills in the background, provided an incredible backdrop that highlighted Olivia & Dan. It was all about making the most of what Thirls Lodge barns have to offer.

The stunning Bride Olivia's Preparation
She got ready in one of the charming cottages on-site, which provided a cosy, intimate setting with lovely natural light. I was able to capture some wonderful shots of her and her bridesmaids getting ready she was also surrounded by her family too, each one filled with excitement and anticipation. The soft, diffused light in the cottage was ideal for close-ups, and it highlighted every smile and touch as the bride prepared for her big moment.

I could ral all day but I will say the entrance to the first kiss was beautiful and their little pug was the ring bearer aw right!
Evening Celebrations and Dancing, Or Should I Say The Party!
Once the sun set, the barn transformed into a lively dance floor. With its soft lighting and rustic decor, the barn provided the perfect setting for evening celebrations. Using a slower shutter speed, I captured the movement and joy of the dance floor, giving the photos a dynamic, fun feel that really captured the energy of the night. The warm lighting in the barn added a lovely glow, keeping the atmosphere festive and intimate.
